About the tutor JO HAMMOND

A couple of years after graduating with a Fine Art degree, I was living in a cottage surrounded by National Trust woodland. The gift of a basketry book opened my eyes to the wonderful possibilities of wild twigs and climbers as well as farmed willow. I got started with the help of more books and a couple of short courses, and a new path in basketry gradually opened up.

Since then I’ve worked for more than twenty years as a maker of baskets, willow sculptures and decorative pieces, and taught many classes and courses. My book, ‘Willow Basketry and Sculpture’ was published in 2014. I love introducing beginners to basketry and willow crafts, seeing the huge satisfaction that comes when you create something beautiful with just a few twigs.
Current work includes delivering Traditional Basketry courses at Easton and Otley colleges in a new venture supported by the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers…and in 2020 I set myself a challenge to make a different ‘hedgerow’ basket every month- see the results on Instagram @twigsnstuff.

It’s the beauty of natural materials that still excites me, and I’m keen to source these as locally and sustainably as possible. Some projects incorporate foraged stems, climbers or leaves, and the immediacy of this process connects me to our hunter-gatherer ancestors- I’m doing what they did, and seeing the world through their eyes..
